Meet Ali MacGraw's First Husband: Robin Hoen

Back in the 1960s, Ali was just starting out in the world of fashion, working as an assistant to the legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland. She was a student at Wellesley College in Massachusetts when she met Robin Hoen, a Harvard student. At the time, Ali was eager to make her mark in the fashion industry, and she found herself drawn to Robin’s charm. Six months after landing her first fashion job, she tied the knot with Robin in 1961.

Ali once said, “I was getting married to a wonderful man, whose family wanted me in the Social Register.” In pursuit of making it into the prestigious Social Register, she had her headshots taken by the renowned photographer Melvin Sokolsky, who offered her a job as a stylist. This marked the beginning of her career in the fashion world, and soon she was building an impressive resume. However, her marriage to Robin didn’t last long. They divorced in 1962 after just one year together.

Ali’s Second Marriage: Robert Evans

Fast forward to 1969, and Ali married Robert Evans, a film producer who had a brief acting career before making his mark behind the scenes. Robert played a pivotal role in bringing some of Paramount’s biggest films to life, including "The Godfather" and "Chinatown." In 1971, Ali and Robert welcomed their son, Josh Evans, into the world. They became grandparents in 2010 when Josh and his second wife, Roxy Saint, had their son, Jackson.

Despite their initial happiness, Ali and Robert's marriage came to an end in 1972. Robert, who was married and divorced seven times in his lifetime, passed away in October 2019 at the age of 89. Their time together may have been brief, but it left an indelible mark on Ali’s life.

Ali's Third Marriage: Steve McQueen

Ali met her third husband, Steve McQueen, on the set of the 1972 film "The Getaway." Steve was one of the biggest movie stars of the 1960s, earning an Academy Award nomination for his role in "The Sand Pebbles" in 1966. The pair fell in love quickly and married in 1973 in Wyoming. Steve's star power was unmatched; he was a Hollywood legend with four Golden Globe nominations and top-billing in blockbuster hits. During her marriage to Steve, Ali chose to step back from her acting career.

Steve was very protective of Ali and didn’t want her working. As she put it, “He was the biggest movie star in the world and he didn’t want me to work. So I essentially quit making movies and took care of my child.” Their marriage ended in 1978, and in 1980, Steve married model Barbara Minty. Tragically, Steve passed away eight months later at the age of 50 from a heart attack after surgery to remove cancerous tumors from his body.
