Andy Griffith's Legacy: A Closer Look At His Family Life And Children

Hey there! Let's talk about the legendary Andy Griffith, a man who became a household name as Sheriff Andy Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show. Over eight seasons, his character was the heart and soul of Mayberry, raising his son Opie (played by the young Ron Howard). But what about Andy Griffith’s real-life family? In his personal life, this Tony-nominated actor adopted two children: his daughter, Dixie Nann Griffith, and his late son, Andy Samuel "Sam" Griffith Jr. Let's dive into the stories of these two remarkable children.

Meet Andy Griffith’s Son, Andy Samuel Griffith Jr.

Let’s rewind to the late '40s when Andy Griffith married his first wife, Barbara Bray Edwards, in 1949. Their lives took a turn in 1957 when Sam, who would later be known as Andy Jr., was born. The couple officially adopted him in 1958, and just a couple of years later, they welcomed another child, Dixie, born in 1960. Both children were adopted into the Griffith family shortly after their births.

By 1972, Andy's first marriage had come to an end. During the filming of The Andy Griffith Show, which aired from 1960 to 1968, the family split their time between Andy's homes in North Carolina and California. Later in life, Sam married Renee Denise Griffith. Unfortunately, Sam faced legal troubles in 1992 when he was arrested for a domestic dispute, an incident that led to his wife suffering a miscarriage, according to the Los Angeles Times.

  • Tragically, Sam's life was cut short in 1996 at the age of 37 due to complications from alcohol addiction. Although Andy didn’t attend his son’s funeral, he was deeply affected by the loss. Dixie shared her thoughts on this heartbreaking chapter: “My brother had some troubles, but it wasn’t my dad’s fault,” she told Closer in June 2018. “It affected my dad on a very, very deep level. I went to my brother’s funeral service, but my dad wasn’t able to go. There would be too many magazines and cameras, and it just wasn’t a good place for him to be.”

Throughout his life, Andy kept his children out of the spotlight, shielding them from the pressures of celebrity life. Andy himself battled health issues before passing away in 2012 from a heart attack at the age of 86. At the time of his death, he was married to his third wife, Cindi Knight.

While Dixie did work briefly as an apprentice on a couple of her father’s made-for-TV films, she ultimately chose a different path, steering clear of the acting world.

“I could have been on the producer’s roster. I chose not to,” she told the Denver Post in July 2012. “Same goes for growing up. I didn’t grow up in the spotlight. Of course, this was before people hid in the bushes outside your door and there were cameras everywhere. My dad was fiercely protective of us. I respected his privacy all my life. I have kept a pretty low profile, which I still plan on doing.”

Despite her father’s busy schedule, Dixie cherished the moments they spent together. “During the summers, we’d go back to North Carolina and play volleyball and water ski,” she reminisced to Closer. “I would play with him in the pool, and he’d put me up on his shoulders. He’d always stop what he was doing to play with me.”

Dixie has continued to maintain her privacy, but she did become a mother herself before her father passed away. She fondly remembers Andy’s zest for life and his joy in hearing about her daughters. “He had a very strong will to live and to enjoy his life,” she revealed. “And he did enjoy his life. One of his favorite things to say, when I’d share news of the girls, was, ‘Well, isn’t that grand!’”
