Mel Brooks: The Story Of His Two Marriages And The Loves Of His Life

You’ve probably heard of Mel Brooks, the legendary EGOT winner whose work in comedy, acting, and filmmaking has left an indelible mark on the entertainment world. But what you might not know is the fascinating story behind his personal life—specifically, his two marriages. Mel’s first wife, Florence Baum, and his second wife, Anne Bancroft, both played significant roles in shaping who Mel is today. Let’s dive into the lives of these incredible women and the impact they had on one of Hollywood’s greatest talents.

First Love: Mel Brooks and Florence Baum

Before Mel Brooks became the comedy icon we know today, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the early 1940s. After returning home, he set his sights on a career in comedy writing. It was during this time that he met Florence Baum, a vibrant and talented Broadway actress with an impressive resume. Florence had already made waves in the theater world with her roles in productions like Gentleman Prefer Blondes, Top Banana, and Two’s Company. She wasn’t just a stage performer; she also graced the small screen as a dancer on The Jackie Gleason Show between 1952 and 1953.

Florence and Mel tied the knot in 1953, and together they built a life filled with laughter and creativity. Their union produced three children: Stephanie Brooks, Nicky Brooks, and Eddie Brooks. Each of them followed in their parents’ footsteps, pursuing careers in entertainment. However, their marriage ended in 1962, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Mel.

Only a year after his divorce from Florence, Mel found love again with none other than the legendary actress Anne Bancroft. By the time they met, Anne was already a household name, having starred in iconic films like The Miracle Worker. She had even won multiple Tony Awards for her work on Broadway. Her career was as dazzling as Mel’s, and their union seemed destined from the start.

Their first encounter took place in 1961 when Anne appeared on The Perry Como Show. During a rehearsal, Mel couldn’t help but express his admiration for her. In a November 2019 interview with Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz, Mel recalled the moment vividly: “She finishes the song. It’s a rehearsal, so you can talk. And I scream out, ‘Anne Bancroft, I love you!’” he exclaimed. “She said, ‘Who are you?’ I said, ‘I’m Mel Brooks!’ She said, ‘I got your record!’ You know, I did a record with Carl Reiner called 2000 Year Old Man.”

From that moment on, Mel knew he was smitten. The couple married in 1964, and Anne was there to support Mel during some of his biggest career milestones. When Mel’s film The Producers premiered in 1967, it earned him an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. In 1972, they welcomed their only child together, son Max Brooks, who would go on to become a bestselling author.

Their partnership extended beyond family life. Anne starred alongside Mel in several projects, including the 1980 film The Elephant Man, where she acted opposite Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt. They even shared the screen in the 1983 comedy To Be or Not to Be. Their collaborations were a testament to their mutual respect and admiration for each other’s talents.

Tragically, their 41-year love story came to an end in 2005 when Anne passed away from uterine cancer at the age of 73. Mel spoke candidly about the loss, telling People magazine in 2021, “Living this life without her is not easy.” Despite the heartache, Mel remains grateful for the incredible memories they shared.

“She always said, ‘Follow your heart. It will be a good adventure,’” Mel reflected. “What an adventure life turned out to be!”
