While Chip and Joanna Gaines have HGTV fans glued to their screens, Shea and Syd McGee have taken the spotlight as Netflix's favorite home renovation couple. Their show is binge-worthy, and their decor line at Target? Swoon-worthy. But the real question on everyone's mind is: Are Shea and Syd McGee still happily married? Let’s dive into their love story, their journey, and how they’ve built a life together that’s as inspiring as their design work.
Let’s rewind to the beginning of this love story. Shea moved to Provo, Utah, from Texas as a teenager to attend Brigham Young University. It was during a visit to her brother, who was studying at Utah Valley University, that fate stepped in. Her brother introduced her to his roommate, Syd McGee. Now, here's the twist—her brother wasn’t exactly rooting for them to hit it off. In her New York Times bestseller, Make Life Beautiful, Shea recalls the moment: “My brother said, ‘My buddy Syd will be there and you’re going to like him, but don’t, because he’s my friend.’”
But chemistry doesn’t listen to rules. As Shea pulled into the parking lot, she saw Syd on a skateboard, rocking the skinniest jeans she’d ever seen. “I knew I was in trouble,” she wrote. The rest, as they say, is history. They went on their first date the very next night, sparking a romance that would lead them to where they are today.

Fast forward a few years, and the couple graduated, got married in 2018, and moved to Laguna Beach, California. But life wasn’t all beaches and sunsets. Shea shared in an interview with MyDomaine how their early days were all about making their small apartment feel like home. “Once Syd and I moved into our first newlywed apartment, all I could think about was transforming our 400 square-foot box into something that felt more like home,” she said. At the time, Shea wasn’t passionate about her day job, so she poured her energy into design magazines and blogs, which would eventually lead to her becoming one of the first interior design influencers on Instagram.
In 2014, the couple made a bold move. They left expensive California behind and headed back to Utah to launch their own design company. “As the firm’s designs and fan base grew, it paved the way for the launch of their e-commerce brand, McGee & Co., two years later,” according to their site, Studio McGee. Their vision was simple yet powerful: to make beautiful design approachable. And it worked. Studio McGee, their line with Target, has become a leader in the interior design industry. Today, nearly a decade after launching their design company, Shea and Syd are still very much in love.
Netflix fans got a peek into the McGee family life when they met Shea and Syd’s daughters, Wren, 8, and Ivy, 5, during the first season of Dream Home Makeover. But the family grew even bigger on July 18, 2021, when the couple welcomed their third daughter, Margot McGee. “We’re so excited to welcome baby girl number three into our family!” the couple told People at the time. “Margot McGee joined us Sunday morning and mama and baby are doing great!”
Unfortunately for fans who were hoping to see baby Margot on the show, the couple wrapped filming for their upcoming third season just one week before her due date. So, while we won’t get to see her TV debut just yet, we’re sure she’ll be stealing hearts soon enough.
