Lea Thompson, best known for her iconic role as Lorraine Baines-McFly opposite Michael J. Fox in the beloved Back to the Future trilogy, has plenty to be grateful for. As she celebrates another year of marriage to film director Howard Deutch, whom she met back in the 1980s, it's clear this relationship has stood the test of time. Let's dive into her journey with Howard, from their first meeting to the love story that continues to this day.
Closer magazine dives deep into the sweet details of Lea and Howard's relationship, exploring how they met and fell in love, and what keeps their bond so strong after all these years.
Lea and Howard's story begins on the set of the 1987 teen rom-com Some Kind of Wonderful, where Lea starred alongside Eric Stoltz and Mary Stuart Masterson. Howard, the film's director, had his heart set on casting Lea — but she initially turned him down! Can you believe it? Around the same time Some Kind of Wonderful was set to begin production, Lea's previous movie, Howard the Duck (1986), had flopped big time. Lea once shared with Salon.com, "I was 26 when I made Some Kind of Wonderful. Right before, I had made Howard the Duck, which got terrible reviews. I thought my career was over." But fate had other plans.

Eric Stoltz, who had worked with Lea on Back to the Future and The Wild Life, acted as a messenger for Howard, delivering the script to her house. Howard saw something special in Lea that others didn't, and this decision ended up changing both their lives forever. In an interview with Salon.com, Howard revealed, "Of course, how sexy Lea [is] was part of why I wanted her in the movie; I had a crush on her that all of my friends teased me about. But there’s also something grounded and relatable about her on screen." Howard went on to say that Lea's casting not only impacted the film but also his personal life. "She had a lot to do, as far as I’m concerned, with the tone changing of that movie as well as some of the other casting," he explained. "It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made." And the rest, as they say, is history. Lea and Howard married in 1989, and Howard joked, "But that’s another story."
