When Sex and the City first graced our screens back in June 1998, who could have imagined that Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis would become the cultural icons they are today? Over the course of six seasons, 94 unforgettable episodes, and two blockbuster films, fans were convinced that a proper reunion was never going to happen. But guess what? Sometimes life surprises you. In 2021, the magic returned with the reboot And Just Like That…, proving that some gifts just keep on giving.
In January 2021, Sarah Jessica Parker dropped a little teaser on social media for the eagerly anticipated And Just Like That…. Filming kicked off in New York City just a few months later, in June. The new series dives deep into the lives of Sarah’s Carrie Bradshaw, Cynthia’s Miranda Hobbes, and Kristin’s Charlotte York Goldenblatt. It explores how these characters navigate the complexities of life and friendship—not in their 30s this time, but in their 50s. Talk about growing up, right?
Now, here’s where things get a little bittersweet. Kim Cattrall’s iconic character, Samantha Jones, didn’t make an appearance in And Just Like That…. Back in July 2019, Kim, who’s also the author of Sexual Intelligence, made it crystal clear that she wasn’t interested in reprising her role. “Never. It’s a no from me,” she told MailOnline at the time. “You learn lessons in life, and my lesson is to work with good people and try to make it fun.”

While Kim’s Samantha and Sarah’s Carrie shared a beautiful onscreen friendship, their real-life relationship couldn’t be more different. In February 2018, Kim publicly called out Sarah on Instagram after Sarah expressed her condolences for the death of Kim’s brother, Chris. “I don’t need your love or support during this tragic time,” Kim wrote in a response that quickly went viral.
Kim wasn’t done there. She continued, “Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now. Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already). You are not my family. You are not my friend. So, I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona.”
During an episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that same month, Sarah opened up about the situation with her longtime friend and show host, Andy Cohen. “I found it very upsetting because that’s not the way I recall our experience,” the Hocus Pocus star explained. “So, it’s sad, but I always think that what ties us together is this singular experience.”
Sure, Sex and the City isn’t quite the same without Samantha, but let’s be real—it’s still a total blast seeing Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte back on our screens. They’ve grown, they’ve evolved, and they’re still as fabulous as ever. It’s like catching up with old friends who’ve been through it all.
