Let me tell you about a love story that’s as inspiring as they come. Phil Donahue, the legendary talk show host, and Marlo Thomas, the iconic actress, shared a bond that spanned four decades. The couple tied the knot in 1980, and for 44 years, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and mutual respect. Unfortunately, Phil passed away on August 18, 2024, but their legacy of love continues to inspire so many of us.
It all started in 1977 when Marlo appeared as a guest on Phil’s groundbreaking talk show. The moment she walked in, something magical happened. Phil couldn’t help but describe her as "fascinating" during the interview. It was clear from the start that these two had a special connection. Marlo later revealed in an interview with Closer in April 2020, “I kissed a lot of frogs, so I wasn’t even looking. I went on Phil’s television show, and that’s how we met. I fell in love.”
As the years rolled by, both Marlo and Phil learned the importance of effective communication in a relationship. Marlo explained, “In the beginning, we argued hot and heavy because we were in more of a power struggle. But as time went on, we evolved. We learned to debate and argue in a calmer, more constructive way. It’s all about growth and understanding each other.”

Marlo often expressed her deep gratitude for having a partner who was so supportive of her career. She told Closer, “So many people don’t have a great partner. They end up with someone who puts them down or isn’t invested in their dreams. Phil was different. No matter how crazy my ideas got, he always believed in me. He’d say, ‘You ought to do that! You’ll be amazing at it.’ I’m incredibly thankful for that kind of love and support.”
Even during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, Marlo found joy in spending time with Phil. In April 2020, she shared with People, “The pandemic taught us the value of slowing down and enjoying each other’s company. Once the hectic schedule picked up again, we promised ourselves to get back to that slower pace. Curling up on the couch with a big bowl of popcorn and watching TV together became our thing. I lovingly called it ‘Netflix and Phil.’”
Before meeting Marlo, Phil had a family of his own. He married his first wife, Margaret Cooney, and together they had five children: Michael, Kevin, Daniel, Mary Rose, and James. After their divorce, Phil took on the responsibility of raising his four sons, while his daughter stayed with her mother.
Marlo openly discussed the challenges of joining a blended family in an interview with Closer in May 2020. She said, “I married someone who had four sons living with him. He belonged to a lot of people, and diving into that situation wasn’t easy for me. But I did it because I loved Phil, and his kids turned out to be wonderful people.”
Marlo adopted a unique strategy to build strong relationships with Phil’s children. In a conversation with AARP in May 2011, she explained, “Growing up, my mom was not just a mom but also a friend to my siblings and me. That friendship meant so much because I knew I could always talk to her, joke with her, and even argue, but nothing would ever harm that bond. So, I took that approach with Phil’s kids, and I’m proud to say that the friendships I built with them are stronger today than ever.”
In August 2024, the world lost a remarkable man. Phil Donahue passed away at the age of 88 following a long illness. His family released a touching statement saying he was “surrounded by his family, including his wife of 44 years, Marlo Thomas, his sister, his children, grandchildren, and his beloved golden retriever, Charlie.”
