Hey there, friends. Today, we’re paying tribute to the incredible Darlene Cates, a woman whose presence in Hollywood was as unforgettable as her journey through life. Rest in peace, Darlene.
On Sunday, March 25, the world lost a remarkable talent when Darlene Cates, best known for her role as Bonnie Grape in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, passed away peacefully in her sleep. Her daughter, Sheri Ann Cates, shared the heartbreaking news in an emotional Facebook post that resonated with fans and loved ones alike.
Sheri Ann wrote, “It is with a bittersweet heart that we share that our precious wife, mother, and Gaga, Darlene Guthrie Cates, was called home, somewhat unexpectedly, peacefully in her sleep Sunday morning, March 26.” Her words capture the profound loss felt by her family and the countless fans who admired Darlene’s work.

“We take comfort in knowing that she is no longer in pain and is in the arms of our Heavenly Father, breaking away only to dance with our Savior, Jesus,” Sheri Ann continued. It’s a beautiful image, isn’t it? Darlene, someone who once spoke fondly of her love for dancing, now free to move with joy in the afterlife. Her passion for life, even in the face of challenges, was something that inspired so many.
For those who may not know, Darlene wasn’t just a star of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. She also graced our screens in TV shows like Picket Fences and Touched by an Angel, as well as the movie Wolf Girl. Her performances were a testament to her incredible talent and versatility as an actress.

Before Darlene became the Bonnie Grape we all know and love, she was discovered by screenwriter Peter Hedges on a 1985 episode of The Sally Jessy Raphael Show. That moment changed everything for her. It was a breakout role that showcased her raw talent and allowed her to shine on the big screen alongside Oscar-winning legend Leonardo DiCaprio.
But Darlene’s story didn’t start there. Born in December 1947 in Borger, Texas, her early life wasn’t easy. When her parents divorced when she was just 12, she turned to food as a source of comfort, which eventually led to her struggles with obesity. Yet, through it all, she remained resilient and determined.

In 1981, Darlene underwent a gastroplasty procedure at 408 pounds, shedding nearly 100 pounds afterward. However, over the years, she regained weight, eventually reaching 548 pounds at her heaviest. Despite these challenges, Darlene never gave up. After a health scare in 2010 left her hospitalized for nearly a year, she lost 240 pounds and expressed her hopes of returning to acting during a 2012 interview. Her determination and courage were truly inspiring.
Darlene married U.S. Marine Robert Cates in 1963, and together they had three children: daughter Sheri Ann and sons Mark Cates and Chris Cates. Her family was her anchor, and it’s clear from Sheri Ann’s heartfelt words that Darlene was not only a beloved actress but also a cherished mother and grandmother.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Darlene’s family during this difficult time. Though she may be gone, her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
