When you think of James Garner, what comes to mind? Maybe it’s the iconic TV series Maverick or The Rockford Files. Or perhaps it’s his unforgettable roles in movies like The Great Escape, Grand Prix, or even his Academy Award-nominated performance in Murphy’s Romance. And let’s not forget classics like Space Cowboys and The Notebook. For many, though, the image that sticks is the one of him alongside Mariette Hartley in those Polaroid camera commercials—those were everywhere! But for Gigi Garner, none of these accomplishments define her dad; he was just... dad.
Gigi Garner, James Garner’s daughter, opens up in an exclusive interview about what it was like growing up with such a legendary figure. “People always ask me about the relationship between us,” Gigi says, her voice warm and nostalgic. “But honestly, I don’t really have anything to compare it to. To me, he was just my dad. He wasn’t perfect—no one is—but he was a great dad, and we were always super close.”
James Scott Bumgarner, later known as James Garner, was born on April 7, 1928, in Norman, Oklahoma. His childhood wasn’t easy. After his mother passed away, he faced abuse at the hands of one of his stepmothers. There’s even a story about being forced to wear a dress in public—it’s hard to imagine, isn’t it? But some comfort came from his father’s last wife, whom he fondly referred to as “Mama Grace.” She became a stabilizing force in his life. After serving in the Korean War, where he earned a Purple Heart, James returned home and gave acting a shot. It turned out to be the right move. He quickly made a name for himself, transitioning seamlessly between films, TV shows, and even commercials. Off-screen, he had a passion for auto racing, golf, and football. Talk about a Renaissance man!

In 1956, James married Lois Josephine Fleischman Clarke, and despite a couple of brief separations, they remained together for nearly 58 years. Together, they had Gigi, but James also had a stepdaughter, Kim, from Lois’s previous marriage. Their bond as a family was strong, and their love story is one for the ages. Tragically, James passed away on July 19, 2014, at the age of 86, from a massive heart attack. But his legacy lives on—in the hearts of fans and through the incredible characters he brought to life on screen.
Ed Robertson, author of 45 Years of The Rockford Files, published in July by Black Pawn Press, sums up Garner’s extraordinary career perfectly. “James Garner was one of those rare actors whose work touched three generations,” Ed explains. “Baby Boomers remember him as the suave outlaw Bret Maverick in Maverick and the star of countless films in the ’60s. For those who grew up in the ’70s, he’s forever Jim Rockford. And then there’s that incredible string of films in the ’80s and ’90s, like Heartsounds, Promise, and Murphy’s Romance. Even today’s younger audiences know him from shows like 8 Simple Rules or movies like The Notebook. That kind of longevity? You’ve got to be something special, and that’s exactly what James Garner was.”
“For me,” Ed continues, “James Garner’s greatest appeal was his willingness to take risks. He wasn’t afraid to put himself out there, to fight for what he believed in. Take, for example, his participation in the 1964 March on Washington for Civil Rights. Or his bold decision to sue Warner Bros. in 1960 over a breach-of-contract lawsuit—a move that could have gotten him blackballed in Hollywood. But Jim wasn’t one to shy away from a challenge. On screen, he let us see him vulnerable, crying, even playing the bad guy. And some of those roles ended up being the best of his career.”
