Let’s talk about the legendary Hollywood star, James Brolin, who has seen and done it all. But guess what? His older grandkids, Trevor Brolin and Eden Brolin, aren’t exactly rushing to hear his pearls of wisdom. In an exclusive chat with Closer Weekly, the Life in Pieces actor hilariously admitted that Trevor and Eden "listen somewhat" to his advice, but not as much as he'd like.
Now, at 80 years young, James has a unique perspective on his relationship with Trevor, 32, and Eden, 26. He jokes that their connection is more about shared activities, like fishing, rather than deep advice sessions. “Yeah, no… I don’t know if anybody likes my advice,” he quips with a laugh. But let’s be real—James knows they’re paying attention, even if they don’t always show it.
James might joke about being "old stupid, old pop," but deep down, he knows his grandkids are listening. “I do hear them when I do talk. I hear them repeating what I said later without realizing it, so they did listen somewhat,” he shares with a smile. And honestly, isn’t that what matters most?

For James, being a grandparent is one of the greatest joys of his life. He would drop everything to be there for Trevor and Eden, whom his son Josh Brolin, 52, shares with his first wife, Alice Adair. But let’s face it—life gets busy, especially when you’re chasing dreams. Eden, for instance, has moved to the countryside near Woodstock, upstate New York, and also spends time in Montana while starring on Paramount Network’s hit show Yellowstone. Meanwhile, Trevor is hard at work as an electrician in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
“I obviously don’t see them that much nowadays,” James admits. But don’t get him wrong—he stays connected. “I talk to them a couple of times a month. Just, ‘Hi, how are you?’” he says with genuine affection.
