At home, Bill was a devoted dad to Virginia, whom he adopted after marrying her mother, Brenda Marshall, in 1941. His presence brought warmth and encouragement to her life. “He made me feel like I could trust him with anything,” Virginia reminisces. “I loved it when he was playful. Did you know he was a trained gymnast? We used to do acrobatics together—it was such a fun bonding experience.”

Despite his charm and talent, Bill faced personal struggles. Alcohol became a constant companion, often starting his days with a glass of vodka mixed with orange juice before heading to the studio. Virginia acknowledges this side of her father, explaining that he joined Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) in 1962 but battled sobriety throughout his life. It’s a reminder that even the strongest among us have vulnerabilities.

Love and Adventure Beyond Hollywood

By the early '70s, Bill’s marriage to Brenda had ended, paving the way for a new chapter in his life. Enter Stefanie Powers, the beloved actress from Hart to Hart. Their romance blossomed, and despite a significant age gap, they formed a deep connection. As Stefanie writes in her 2011 memoir, One From the Hart, “We were curious about life in the same ways. We truly were soulmates.”

Together, they explored their shared love for wildlife, embarking on frequent trips to Africa. “It was like stepping into a real-life adventure,” Stefanie recalls fondly. “Sleeping under the stars, tracking animals—it was magical. We felt alive in a way that only nature can provide.”

A Hidden Role in History

Bill’s adventures weren’t limited to safaris. During the Cold War era, he found himself entangled in global politics. “After the Korean War, Bill developed an interest in parts of Southeast Asia,” Stefanie explains. “The CIA approached him, asking if he’d report back any observations he might make during his travels. He was part of that intrigue-filled world of the '50s.”
