There aren’t many people in the world who can say the future Queen of England made them a cup of coffee. But former royal gardener Jack Stooks is one of them. It’s a story so warm and personal that it gives us a rare glimpse into the human side of royalty.
“I was out in her garden one day, and she came outside and asked, ‘Would you like a drink?’” Jack Stooks exclusively told Closer. “I thought she’d go inside and ask someone else to make it for me. But no, she actually made it right in front of me.”
For over two decades, Jack Stooks worked at Highgrove House, the private residence of King Charles and Queen Camilla. This position gave him an intimate view of the royal family, including King Charles, 76, Queen Camilla, 77, and other members of the royal household. His insights reveal a family that’s not just regal but also deeply caring.

“They’re all just such a lovely, wonderful family,” Stooks shared with Closer, speaking on behalf of Fruity King, a mobile casino. “King Charles is particularly down to earth. He’s genuinely interested in the lives of his staff.”
Stooks recounted a personal story about King Charles’ thoughtfulness. “I had a pretty bad back problem,” he said. “He even recommended a specific physiotherapist for me to see. That’s the kind of person he is—always looking out for his team.”
King Charles is known for his dedication to environmental causes. In 1986, he converted his 900-acre farm at Highgrove to organic practices, long before it became trendy. This commitment to nature reflects in every aspect of his life, including his garden crew.
“He has a deep love for nature and the countryside,” Stooks added. “It’s not just about appearances; he genuinely cares about preserving the environment.”
King Charles doesn’t shy away from getting his hands dirty. He enjoys participating in traditional gardening techniques like hedge laying, a centuries-old method of shaping hedges into natural fences. It’s hard work, but it’s something he does with passion and precision.
“It’s demanding work, but he loves it,” Stooks explained. “He’s got a real appreciation for old-fashioned methods and traditions. And when he does something, he does it right.”
