You know, it's not every day that Meg Ryan steps out in public, especially with her celebrity pals. The beloved star of Top Gun has been living mostly out of the limelight over the past few years. She’s taken a break from the Hollywood hustle, choosing to make only a handful of rare appearances. It’s like she’s been quietly enjoying life behind the scenes, away from the cameras and the glitz.
Before stepping away, Meg was a household name, starring in some of the biggest films of her time. Think Sleepless in Seattle, When a Man Loves a Woman, and City of Angels. Her last acting roles came in 2015, with projects like Fan Girl, Ithaca, and Picture Paris. Even in 2020, she kept her fans engaged by narrating the podcast series “Cut and Run.” But it’s clear that Meg’s focus has shifted, and she’s been exploring new paths outside of acting.
So, why did Meg decide to take a step back from her Hollywood career? Well, in a candid interview with The New York Times Magazine back in February 2019, she opened up about her decision. She said, “I wasn’t as curious about acting as I was about other things that life can give you. I wanted to live more.”

Meg continued, “I don’t feel like, naturally, I’m a performer.” She added, “I knew I was being given opportunities and that there was certain music I could play as an actor. Certain things I could do. And I liked acting. I thought it was fun. But acting was a situation I was navigating.” It’s like she realized there’s more to life than just being in front of the camera, and she wanted to explore that.
Fast forward to May 2022, and Meg announced she was set to make her long-awaited Hollywood return. This time, she wasn’t just acting—she was directing and starring in the film What Happens Later, alongside the talented David Duchovny. It’s a big move, and it shows that Meg is ready to bring her unique perspective to the director’s chair.
Gabrielle Stewart from distributor HanWay Films shared her excitement, saying, “It is exciting to have Meg Ryan bring the weight of her experience in the genre to the director’s chair and to matchmake her with such a wonderful sparring partner in David Duchovny.”
By May 2023, the film was in post-production, and fans were eager to learn more about the upcoming romantic comedy. That’s when Meg made a rare public appearance at a screening of the documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie in New York City. She joined her good friend Michael J. Fox, along with his wife, Tracy Pollan, and a star-studded lineup of Hollywood legends like Bill Murray, Katie Couric, Elvis Costello, Joan Jett, and Ali Wentworth.
It was a night of celebration, friendship, and support, with Meg stepping back into the spotlight for a good cause. Fans were thrilled to see her out and about, and it’s clear that she’s still a beloved figure in the entertainment world.
