His son, Dr. Ryan Urich, fondly recalls his father's relentless dedication to his craft. "He was the definition of a consummate professional," Ryan tells Closer Weekly in their latest issue, now available on newsstands. "Acting wasn't just a job for him—it was his true passion. He always wanted to keep going, and for him, it never felt like work."

A Journey from Football to Acting

Robert's journey to Hollywood began when he earned a football scholarship to Florida State University. Unfortunately, an injury ended his football career, but it opened the door to a new path. Robert transitioned into modeling and acting, finding his big break when fellow FSU alum Burt Reynolds cast him in a 1972 stage production. "Robert was an incredible athlete, artist, and a wonderful friend," Burt once said, according to the L.A. Times. "He was one of those rare individuals who never had a bad word to say about anyone. His professionalism was second to none."

A Versatile Actor with a Positive Attitude

Robert's positive and can-do attitude made him a favorite among producers, leading to diverse roles across sitcoms, action shows, and Westerns. Whether starring in Soap, S.W.A.T., or Lonesome Dove, Robert approached each project with enthusiasm. "He wasn't the type to dwell on the negative aspects," Ryan explains. "If a show didn't work out, he'd simply see it as another step toward the next opportunity. He valued every experience, enjoyed working with talented people, and appreciated the chance to perform."

A Life Beyond the Spotlight

Robert's personal life was marked by resilience and love. After his first marriage to actress Barbara Rucker ended in divorce in 1974, he found happiness with Heather Menzies, known for her role as Louisa in The Sound of Music. Their marriage lasted until Robert's passing. "What made their relationship work was that they were both down-to-earth people," Ryan shares. "They didn't get caught up in the Hollywood scene and genuinely understood each other. Their ideal day was anything that allowed them to be together."

A Family Built on Love and Adoption

After facing multiple miscarriages, Robert and Heather adopted three children: Ryan, now 40, and his sisters Emily, 39, and Allison, 21. "He was incredibly calm and communicative," Ryan remembers. "Even when I got into trouble at school, he'd sit down with me, often lying on the floor, and ask, 'What's really going on?' He always tried to understand and connect with me."
