In this candid interview, Brenda Vaccaro opens up about her seven-year relationship with Michael Douglas in the '70s, a time when they "almost got married." She recalls how their paths crossed after she starred in the iconic film Midnight Cowboy. "Michael fell in love with me and asked his dad, Kirk Douglas, to introduce us. He even offered me a part in Summertree in 1971," she explains. "He was an incredible guy, and I loved him deeply. But back then, marriage wasn't on my radar."
Brenda tells Closer that in the '70s, traditional commitments weren't the norm. "We decided to have a 'hippie wedding' at my agent's house. We exchanged vows, promising to love each other forever. But when it came time to make it official, I froze. I said 'yes,' but then I backed out. Looking back, I know I messed up big time."

"I fell deeply in love with someone else, actor Don Stroud," Brenda admits. "It was a connection so intense—spiritually, emotionally, and physically—that I couldn't handle it. My dear friend Robert Shaw, who was working on Jaws at the time, warned me. He said I was making a rash decision and that fleeting pleasures would lead to lasting regrets if I left Michael. He was absolutely right. I regret it all. That was a different era, filled with drugs and wild parties. It was chaotic."

Today, Brenda is happily married to Guy Hector, her partner of 31 years. "It all started at a charity event at my house. My dog ran straight into his arms, and that was it. He even took care of my dog while I was filming in Denver. We began as friends, and during a memorable road trip to Northern California, we realized this was meant to be."
