In the latest issue of Closer Weekly, legendary journalist Ann Curry opens up about the incredible support she's received from her family throughout her illustrious career. Ann, who has traveled the globe covering stories in some of the most dangerous places, shares how her husband, Brian Ross, and their children, McKenzie and Walker, played a pivotal role in her success. From risking her life in countries like Pakistan and Iran to reporting on humanitarian crises, Ann's journey has been both challenging and rewarding.
While Ann waited until her kids were older to take on the more perilous assignments, she still grappled with the decision to leave them behind. In an emotional moment, she recounts returning home to find heartwarming signs on her apartment door that read, “Welcome back, Mom! Thanks for saving the world!” This simple gesture from her children reminded her of the impact her work had not just on the world, but also on her family. “It was those little things that kept me going,” Ann tells Closer, reflecting on the sacrifices she made for her career.

After stepping away from the limelight following her emotional departure from Today in 2012, Ann is excited to make her return to television this December with her six-part PBS series, We’ll Meet Again. This series dives deep into the human stories that have always driven her passion for journalism. “I was searching for a way to do meaningful journalism,” Ann explains to Closer. “This series is exactly that—it’s a way to tell stories that matter, stories that connect people in profound ways.”
Throughout her career, Ann’s husband and children have been her biggest cheerleaders. “Brian was always there, helping our kids understand why I had to be away,” Ann recalls. “He’d say, ‘We miss Mom, but she’s doing something important. Shouldn’t we support her?’” This unwavering support has been crucial in allowing Ann to pursue her dreams while still being a devoted mother.
Despite the challenges of juggling a demanding career with raising two children, Ann never lost sight of what mattered most. “It’s tough, there’s no denying that,” she admits. “But I always knew my top priority was my kids. They were the job I wasn’t going to mess up.” Her commitment to her family has only strengthened her resolve to make a difference in the world.

Ann’s career has not only shaped her but also influenced her children in profound ways. She recalls a poignant moment during the Balkan crisis in 1999 when she called home from war-torn Kosovo. Her young children expressed genuine concern for those suffering, showing her the value of her work. “I realized that kids learn more from what you do than what you say,” Ann shares, her voice thick with emotion. “That was a powerful lesson for me.”
