During the summer months, the Ritter family traveled together as Tex embarked on concert tours. Dorothy, in particular, left a lasting impression on her sons. “My mom was the most positive and uplifting person you could ever meet,” he adds. John carried those values with him, especially when it came to his brother Tom, who was born with cerebral palsy. “Growing up, John was more than a brother—he was my protector,” Tom reveals. “He stood up for me and shielded me from bullies. He had this incredible way of making everyone feel valued.”

John Ritter Discovers His Passion for Acting

John initially started college with plans to major in psychology at the University of Southern California. But something clicked when he switched to theater. Enrolling in the USC School of Dramatic Arts was the turning point. Tex, who knew the struggles of show business all too well, wasn’t exactly thrilled at first. “My dad was the last of the three of us to fully support John’s dream,” Tom laughs. “But after seeing one of John’s performances, he turned to my mom and said, ‘I guess we lost him.’ What he meant was, John had undeniable talent, and there was no stopping him.”

When John landed the role of Jack Tripper on Three’s Company in 1976, even Tom had doubts. “The idea of unmarried people living together felt outdated by the late '70s,” he admits. “But John and the cast made it fun. They turned it into something America couldn’t get enough of.” Tom loved watching the show with his mom. “There was this special sparkle in her eye,” he remembers. “She was proud of John, obviously, but it was more than that. It was a mom watching her kid doing what he loved and doing it so well.”

John Ritter: A Heart Full of Giving

Service to others was another value Tex and Dorothy passed down to their sons. “My mom was an officer of the United Cerebral Palsy national organization and worked tirelessly with the Commission on Disability,” Tom explains. “John carried that torch by hosting the annual United Cerebral Palsy Telethon for years.”

Fame only deepened John’s commitment to helping others. “He believed that we’re all in this together,” Tom says. “No one is the captain of the ship; we’re all passengers who need to pull their weight.”

John’s generosity didn’t stop with him—it inspired his four children. “He saw their kind and loving hearts and nurtured those qualities,” Tom says. “You can see pieces of him in each of them. His spirit lives on through their humor and comedic timing.”

Today, the entire Ritter family honors John’s legacy through the John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health. This foundation funds research and raises awareness about the preventable heart condition that tragically took John’s life in 2003. “John’s legacy isn’t just about the laughter he brought to the world,” Tom reflects. “It’s about the ripple effect of kindness and love that continues to spread.”
