Katie Couric, the renowned broadcaster who has captured the hearts of millions, has a deeply personal story of love, loss, and finding happiness again. After the heart-wrenching passing of her first husband, Jay Monahan, Katie went on to find love once more with her second husband, John Molner. Her journey is one of resilience and hope. Let’s dive into the details of her remarkable love story, starting with her first marriage and moving on to the life she’s built with John.
For Katie Couric, meeting Jay Monahan was like stepping into a fairy tale. It all began at a party in Virginia back in the '80s, where their paths crossed while Katie was working at WRC. Jay, a Georgetown Law School graduate, was already making waves as an attorney in Washington, D.C., when they met. Little did they know, this chance encounter would lead to a love story that would shape both their lives forever.
They tied the knot in 1989, and soon after, in 1991, their first daughter, Elinor Tully “Ellie” Monahan, was born. Their family grew even more complete in 1996 with the arrival of their youngest, Caroline “Carrie” Monahan. Katie’s career took off around this time too, as she became a permanent cohost on the iconic Today show, with Jay always by her side, cheering her on. Interestingly, Jay also joined the NBC family, working as a legal analyst.

Unfortunately, life threw them a devastating curveball when Jay was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1997. Tragically, he passed away in 1998 at the young age of 42. Katie opened up about this painful chapter in her memoir, Going There, published in October 2021. Reflecting on those early days with Jay, she wrote, “Writing this and remembering Jay and the early days of our courtship — the handsome, young, mischievous Jay I met that freezing January night at a party in northern Virginia — it reminded me of the sheer joy of starting out, starting our lives together.”
To this day, Katie keeps Jay’s memory alive by sharing heartfelt tributes and photos on Instagram, especially on significant dates like his birthday, death anniversary, and their marriage anniversary. Both Katie and her daughters have also become staunch advocates for colon cancer screening. Inspired by Jay’s battle, Katie co-founded Stand Up To Cancer in 2008, aiming to raise funds for cancer research. Even after her own breast cancer diagnosis in September 2022, Katie continues to champion the cause close to her heart.
After several years of being single, Katie’s life took a new turn when she met John Molner in 2012. A mutual friend set them up on a date, and the rest, as they say, is history. Two years later, in the picturesque setting of the Hamptons, they exchanged vows and started a new chapter together. John, an Illinois native, had built a successful career in finance after studying at the prestigious University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Meeting Katie changed everything for him.
Reflecting on his thoughts before meeting Katie, John shared in an October 2021 post on Katie Couric Media’s official website, “I was single for years before I met Katie, and I was starting to think about what I might look for in someone if I were going to get remarried. And I wanted somebody who had their own activities, their own passions, whether that meant she was a lawyer or a doctor or a stamp collector. So be careful what you wish for, I guess. But yeah, Katie’s had a big life. That didn’t intimidate me, but it fascinated me and I enjoyed it. She loves doing what she’s doing and she’s good at it. So, I’m lucky.”
