Have you ever stopped to think about the homes of your favorite sitcom families? You might not have given it much thought, but Marina Coates, the creative genius behind Mockingbird Lane Design, sure has. With incredible attention to detail, she's digitally reconstructed the iconic interiors of some of television's most beloved houses. Whether it's the enchanting world of Bewitched at 1164 Morning Glory Circle, The Dick Van Dyke Show's cozy abode at 148 Bonnie Meadow Road, or Lucy's charming apartment at 623 East 68th Street, Marina's work brings these places to life. But if there's one house that truly stands out, it’s the eerie and endearing Munsters' mansion at 1313 Mockingbird Lane. Now, thanks to Marina, you can take a virtual trip right into these legendary homes.
Marina Coates, the brains behind the YouTube channels Cinematically Inspired Design and Behind the Scenes, has made it her mission to recreate the homes of our favorite TV shows. In this article, we're diving deep into her work on The Munsters, where she shares her unique perspective as both a fan and a designer. "As a kid, I was completely mesmerized by this spooky house," Marina recalls in an interview with Closer. "It had all the classic haunted house elements that kids love—creepy staircases, secret passageways, and more—but it felt safe. It was like getting to explore a haunted house without any of the scary parts. You could just enjoy the adventure."
Fast forward to adulthood, and Marina's love for the Munsters' home has only grown. "When I recreated this house on my computer, I had so much fun. It was like adding all the cool, creepy details I'd always dreamed of—missing chunks of plaster, a dragon under the stairs, crooked paintings, even a trapdoor," she explains. "But as I worked, I noticed something else: this house has incredible bones. It's not just spooky; it's downright beautiful. That’s why I created a ‘cleaned-up’ version of the home in color, removing all the eerie elements. Without the electric chair, with straightened pictures and repaired walls, it’s still stunning. It's a gorgeous Victorian home, and the set designers deserve all the credit in the world."

The Munsters originally aired from 1964 to 1966, alongside The Addams Family, and it gave us a classic sitcom with a supernatural twist. Amazingly, it's been on the air continuously since its debut, captivating generation after generation. What keeps it relevant? Marina has a theory. "It's fun to watch a family that’s so different from the norm, navigating the same world we live in," she says. "The underlying joke is that they’re completely oblivious to how others see them, and we get to be in on that joke. Here’s a house full of monsters, but it’s a safe haven—a loving, tight-knit family. And then there’s the incredible cast. Who doesn’t love Fred Gwynne as Herman? He’s this big, goofy kid trapped in a monster-sized body. The chemistry between him and Al Lewis as Grandpa is pure comedic gold. The entire cast was perfectly chosen, making these bizarre characters both believable and lovable."
