Hey there, friends. You know how sometimes life gets a little hectic, and you just need a breather? Well, that's exactly what's happening with Craig Melvin. The beloved cohost of Today is taking some time off to recharge, and guess who's stepping in to keep the show running smoothly? It's none other than the talented sportscaster Mike Tirico.
It was Savannah Guthrie who broke the exciting news during a recent episode. “We’ve got some special news!” she announced with a grin. “After Mike gets his fill of golf, all next week he’s going to join us right here in studio 1A.” She explained that Craig, who's 45, is heading out for spring break with his family—his wife, Lindsay Czarniak, and their two kids, Delano, 11, and Sybil, 8.
Now, here’s where things get interesting. When Savannah asked Mike if he was ready to take on the challenge, he initially joked around. “I was so excited about it, and then I just watched Jon Hamm’s live audition and now I’m out. I can’t do this,” he quipped, referencing a segment where Today guest Jon Hamm read lines off the teleprompter during an interview with Savannah.

But don’t worry, Mike didn’t leave it there. He continued, “But no, Melvin showed he could host the Olympics when I was traveling back and forth, so figure if we can try to go for an even trade here, I’m looking forward to being with y’all next week.”
Savannah couldn’t contain her excitement. “It’s awesome. It’s all in the family. We love it,” she said with a big smile. And Craig chimed in with a little humor of his own, saying, “This is also, by the way, literally the only job in television Mike Tirico has not done,” which had everyone laughing.
The Today team shared the announcement on their official Instagram page, and fans couldn’t be more thrilled. “Have a great vacation Craig but having Mike fill in will be fun to watch,” one person commented, while another said, “Omg this is actually iconic!!!!”
For those who might not know, Mike Tirico has been in the sportscasting game for over 30 years. He officially joined NBC Sports back in 2016. Meanwhile, Craig was promoted to coanchor alongside Savannah after Hoda Kotb decided to step back to spend more time with her family.
Back when Craig was announced as Savannah’s new cohost, Mike was featured in a segment congratulating him. “This has to be the smoothest transition ever,” Mike said. “I’ll tell you why. He was elected by a super, super, super majority. He was the consensus choice. It was obvious,” Savannah replied.
“He is absolutely made for this job and for this moment,” Savannah added. Craig himself chimed in, saying, “Hopefully it’s not going to be that much different. I’ll get up a little earlier. Hoda gave me some advice. If you start changing things, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Who you’ve been and what you’ve done has gotten you to where you are. I’m going to show up earlier. I’m going to bring Savannah a cup of coffee every morning. I think that’s all I can do.”
