Meryl Streep Shares Dressing Room With Amy Poehler: A Night To Remember

Listen, it’s not every day you get to share a dressing room with Meryl Streep, right? Comedy legend Amy Poehler recently opened up about the unforgettable experience of being backstage with the iconic actress during Saturday Night Live's 50th Anniversary show. Let me tell you, Amy was feeling it. Sharing space with a three-time Oscar winner? That’s some serious star power.

“I remember stepping into that dressing room and there she was, Meryl Streep herself,” Amy recalled with a laugh on the podcast “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend.” “She wasn’t just lounging around, either. Oh no, she was deep in rehearsal mode. I mean, this woman was rehearsing like her life depended on it. I thought to myself, ‘I’ve never worked as hard as Meryl Streep is working right now.’”

Now here’s the thing: despite her decades-long career and countless accolades, Meryl Streep had never set foot on the SNL stage before that night. At 75 years old, she stepped out of her comfort zone to deliver a performance that left everyone buzzing. And let me tell you, she didn’t just phone it in. During a skit with Kate McKinnon about alien abductions, Meryl broke character and laughed so hard it became one of the most talked-about moments of the night.

Let’s rewind for a second. For years, Meryl Streep has been the queen of serious dramatic roles, known for her incredible range and ability to master any accent under the sun. But these days, she’s loosening up and taking on projects that are just plain fun. In 2022, she reached out to none other than Steve Martin, her co-star from the 2009 film It’s Complicated, asking if they could create a role for her in the third season of Only Murders in the Building. Talk about a bold move!

“I was a huge fan of the show,” Meryl admitted at a press event on the Paramount lot. “And honestly, I just wanted to have some fun because, let’s face it, the world can be a pretty rough place right now.”

Her character, Loretta—an aspiring actress with a flair for drama and a knack for getting tangled up in murder mysteries—has become a fan favorite. The role carried over into the fourth season and will return for the upcoming fifth season. Working alongside Meryl is Martin Short, who plays Loretta’s love interest. He says it’s been an absolute thrill.

“The first day of shooting, which was rare because I’m not exactly new to this industry, I was driving to work and I thought, ‘I’m nervous today,’” Martin confessed at the same press event. “I’m working with Meryl Streep.’ Can you believe that? The woman has been nominated for an Oscar 21 times!”
