Sigourney Weaver Opens Up About Her 39-Year Marriage To Jim Simpson

Oscar-winning actress Sigourney Weaver is sharing the secrets behind her enduring 39-year marriage to her husband, Jim Simpson. In a candid conversation, she credits his laid-back spirit for keeping their relationship strong through the ups and downs of life. Born Susan Weaver in New York City, the legendary star, now 73, chose her stage name from a minor character in The Great Gatsby. She met Jim during a theater production in upstate New York back in 1983. At the time, Jim was working as a director and also bartending at a quirky spot called the Zoo. Sigourney recalls a memorable night when their paths first crossed in an unexpected way. "It was so dark in there, and I took my shoes off to dance on the dirt floor," she explains. "Imagine my surprise when this man—my future husband—rescued my shoes. I had to approach him and say, 'Excuse me, sir, where are my shoes?' That was the start of something special."

A Slow-Building Romance

While Sigourney admits Jim caught her eye right away, love didn't strike instantly. "He was so good-looking," she reminisces. "I remember thinking, 'This guy is going to be a bachelor for years.' So, I didn't give it much thought initially. Plus, I already had a boyfriend at the time." But fate had other plans. Within six months, Sigourney invited Jim to a party, where he stayed late to help her clean up. "He stayed to assist me with decorations, and then I asked him out to dinner. Three months later, we decided to get married. Sometimes, love just happens like that," she adds with a laugh.

Life Beyond the Spotlight

Despite her high-profile career, Sigourney insists she prefers staying out of the limelight. The couple resides primarily in New York, where they raised their daughter, Char, now 33, away from the chaos of Hollywood. "I try not to be in the public eye too often," she shares. "When I have a project I'm passionate about, I go all-in, but otherwise, we live a pretty quiet life." Sigourney enjoys outdoor adventures like hiking and exploring Britain alongside Jim, proving that even the most celebrated actors can lead simple, fulfilling lives.

Marriage: A Leap of Faith

Reflecting on their long-lasting marriage, Sigourney acknowledges the hard work and communication required to keep the spark alive. "Of course, relationships take effort, and you have to be open to talking things through," she admits. "But choosing the right person is crucial.
