The Road to Stardom Wasn’t Always Smooth

Even stars like Buddy faced setbacks. Originally cast as the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, Buddy was forced to leave the role when the aluminum dust in his body paint made him critically ill. “The studio claimed it was an allergic reaction, but it was much more serious than that,” Kiki reveals. “It was toxic.” Despite this setback, Buddy didn’t let it define him. He kept pushing forward, eventually landing TV gigs that would change his life forever.

In 1962, at the ripe age of 54, Buddy struck gold as Jed Clampett in The Beverly Hillbillies. The show became a sensation, earning him widespread recognition. Later, he starred in Barnaby Jones, portraying an aging private investigator on the hunt for his son’s killer. Despite the influx of wealth, Buddy remained grounded. “He believed in working hard for what you wanted,” Kiki explains. “Our upbringing wasn’t lavish, but it was rich in values.”

Love and Legacy in Later Years

Love found Buddy again at the age of 77, when he married Dorothy, his third wife. “He was incredibly happy with Dorothy,” Kiki reminisces. “They traveled and embraced the wisdom that came with decades of life experience.” This late-in-life romance brought Buddy immense joy, proving that love knows no age limits.

Honoring a Legendary Father

Kiki Ebsen, through her cabaret-style jazz show My Buddy, pays tribute to her father’s life and legacy. Though they didn’t always agree—he wanted her to sing jazz, but she pursued rock music—Kiki now embraces his vision. “He taught me so much,” she reflects. “Like the time we bottle-fed baby mice or when he pointed to the stars to calm my nerves before a piano recital. He’d say, ‘We’re just a speck on a speck in the sky. Don’t worry. It’s OK.’ His way of putting things into perspective was truly remarkable.”

Buddy’s wisdom and unwavering support left an everlasting impression on Kiki. “I miss him every day,” she admits. “But celebrating his life reminds me of the profound impact he had on everyone who knew him.”
