Let’s talk about Kathie Lee Gifford, the ever-energetic and beloved former Today show host. Recently, she took a pretty tough tumble that left her with a fractured pelvis, and according to an exclusive source, she’s quietly struggling to cope after her surgery. At 71, Kathie Lee has been through a lot, but this latest setback has hit her hard. Let’s dive into her story and see how she's handling it all.
Kathie Lee underwent a full hip replacement back in June, which she described as “one of the most painful situations” she’s ever faced in her entire life. In a candid interview with People on July 16, she opened up about just how challenging the recovery process has been. Despite the doctor’s warnings that she needed to take it easy, especially considering her age, Kathie Lee wasn’t one to sit still for long. She was determined to bounce back quickly, thinking the recovery would be a breeze.
“I jumped off that gurney as soon as I could,” Kathie Lee admitted. She thought the recovery would be easy, but it turned out to be anything but. She pushed herself too hard, too fast, and it didn’t take long for her to realize the gravity of the situation. “I walked, I climbed, I walked,” she recalled. “And my doctor said, ‘Kathie, no. You have got to realize that this is serious.’” But Kathie Lee wasn’t one to listen. She was off her walker in two days, off all her medications in three, and before she knew it, she had overdone it. “I just did too much because that’s who I am,” she confessed.

As it turns out, the surgery was a bit too much for even Kathie Lee’s indomitable spirit to handle. While moving around her multi-story Nashville home, she headed down the stairs too quickly and ended up taking a tumble down nearly the entire flight, fracturing her hip in two places. This required another hospital stay, and this time, she knew she had to take it seriously. “I was running down the stairs here at my home in Tennessee because my friend was locked out of my back door and it was 100 degrees outside,” she explained. “I live in a four-story brownstone, so I just went too fast, in stupid shoes, and I went tumbling.”
Laid up in bed for a more serious recovery this time, Kathie Lee found herself facing a new challenge: isolation. According to a source, the accident left her feeling vulnerable and scared, and she’s worried about what could happen if no one’s around to help. “Kathie Lee is quietly battling fears of being alone and suffering another dangerous fall,” the insider revealed. “The accident left her feeling vulnerable and scared, and she’s worried about what could happen if no one’s around to help.”
Kathie Lee’s late husband, Frank Gifford, passed away in August 2015 at the age of 84, leaving her alone much of the time. “Growing old isn’t easy, especially when you’re alone,” the source adds. But Kathie Lee isn’t alone in her struggles. She has her family to lean on, including her beloved grandkids Frankie and Ford, born to son Cody Gifford and his wife, Erika Gifford, and grandson Finn, born to daughter Cassidy Gifford and her husband, Ben Wierda.
“Beyond happy to be home with my precious little guys,” Kathie Lee, 71, captioned a photo with one of her grandsons on September 27. She recently gave an update to Today on August 13, telling fans, “I have been in no pain now and when that happens to you, you have to give credit and glory… credit to all the prayers, and when I think about the people that have reached out to me and said, ‘Kathie, have a speedy recovery, we’re praying for a speedy recovery,’ that’s about as speedy as you get!”
