Actress Lauren Holly has had an incredible 35-year career in Hollywood, and she’s looking back with gratitude and joy. Known for her iconic roles in Dumb and Dumber, Picket Fences, and now Designated Survivor, Lauren has made a lasting impact on audiences worldwide. In a candid conversation with Closer Weekly, she shares her experiences working alongside legends like Jim Carrey, her busy life as a single mom of three adopted sons, and what keeps her grounded through it all.
Lauren fondly recalls her time with Jim Carrey, her co-star in Dumb and Dumber, and the years they spent together both personally and professionally. “Jim and I stayed close, even after our nine-month marriage in 1996,” she says. “We’re still in touch, and I have nothing but the best memories of working with him. It was pure laughter and fun every day. Jim is a constant source of entertainment, and I’m grateful for the time we shared.”
At 55, Lauren continues to captivate audiences with her performances. She’s currently starring in the third season of Designated Survivor, which premieres on Netflix, and taking on new challenges with the Hailey Dean Mysteries films on Hallmark. Balancing her demanding career with raising three teenage boys—Henry, 16, George, 17, and Alex, 18—has been no small feat, especially as a single mother after her divorce from investment banker Francis Greco in 2014.

Raising three boys on her own has been a challenge, but Lauren says it’s been worth it. “Teaching them to be gentlemen without a male role model at home has been tough, but I’m proud of how responsible and kind they’ve turned out to be,” she shares. “Sometimes, all it takes is a good laugh to make things easier. Humor has been my secret weapon in parenting.”
Lauren is thrilled about her role in the latest season of Designated Survivor, a show that delves into the political landscape with depth and drama. “Season 3 focuses on President Kirkman’s election campaign, and my character adds a layer of complexity to the storyline,” she explains. “I play the wife of the new chief of staff, portrayed by Anthony Edwards, and the daughter of a powerful senator. My character struggles with opioid addiction after injuring her back, highlighting an issue that’s affecting so many people in our country.”
Lauren’s schedule is packed with exciting projects. She’s starring in The Cuban, a heartwarming independent film featuring Louis Gossett Jr. as a man with dementia whose life is transformed through music. Another project, Tammy’s Always Dying, is a dark comedy directed by Amy Jo Johnson, the original Pink Power Ranger. “I can’t wait for audiences to see these films,” Lauren says. “They showcase different sides of my acting abilities and bring fresh stories to life.”
When asked about her time on Picket Fences, Lauren lights up. “It was one of the best experiences of my career, thanks to the brilliant writing of David E. Kelley. The cast was incredible, and I loved how my character balanced comedy and drama. The producers were also incredibly supportive, allowing me to take on other projects while still being part of the show.”
Lauren remembers her time on Dumb and Dumber fondly. “It was a magical experience. We traveled to different locations, rented houseboats, and spent countless hours laughing together. The movie’s energy was infectious, and it was a bonding experience that I’ll never forget.”
Lauren has maintained close relationships with many of her costars over the years. “Louis Ferreira, my co-star on Motive, is still a dear friend. Kellie Martin and I became inseparable while filming the Hailey Dean movies. On Designated Survivor, I love exchanging political insights with Kal Penn, and Anthony Edwards and I stay in touch regularly. And let’s not forget Rosalind Allen, who’s been my best friend since we met on All My Children decades ago.”

Working with Mel Gibson on What Women Want brought its own set of surprises. “During the filming of The Patriot, the horse wrangler borrowed my horse, Pablo, for Mel. When we worked together on What Women Want, the first thing I said to him was, ‘I own Pablo.’ He was shocked! Mel sent me the movie poster signed, and it’s one of my treasured keepsakes.”
Lauren was born in Bristol, Pennsylvania, but spent most of her childhood in Geneva, New York. “My dad is still a professor there, and it’s great being close to him now that I live in Toronto. I always knew I wanted to act, even though I initially thought I’d go to law school. While studying at Sarah Lawrence College, I landed the lead role in a play, and producer Fred Roos saw me. He cast me in Seven Minutes in Heaven with Jennifer Connelly, and that’s when I realized this was my path.”
