Who doesn’t love Lisa Whelchel? As the iconic star of The Facts of Life, she stole our hearts as Blair Warner. Now, she’s sharing her life updates exclusively with Closer, revealing how her family has become the center of her world. It’s a heartwarming story that will make you smile and reminisce about the good old days.
In her own words, Lisa shares, "I’m living the dream now. I’m a proud grandmother to two beautiful grandchildren, aged 5 and 3, and I get to babysit them once a week. Watching them grow and develop is one of the greatest joys of my life. And, oh yeah, I’m also newly married! We’ve been together for about eight years, and it’s such a blessing to experience this kind of love later in life. It’s richer, deeper, and more fulfilling because you truly appreciate it."
At just 12 years old, Lisa Whelchel embarked on a remarkable journey in the world of entertainment. She started her career as a Mouseketeer on The New Mickey Mouse Club in 1977, and her star only continued to rise when she landed the role of Blair Warner on The Facts of Life. "I don’t even remember what it was like to have a childhood outside of television because I’ve been on camera since I was so young," Lisa reminisces. "It’s all I’ve ever known, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything."

When you think of The Facts of Life, you picture a group of young women learning life lessons under the guidance of Mrs. Garrett. But what was it really like behind the scenes? According to Lisa, it was pure fun. "We were incredibly lucky because the producers allowed us to be kids. We weren’t treated like adults; we were allowed to laugh, play, and just enjoy the process of making the show," she explains.
And then there was the addition of George Clooney to the cast, which brought an extra layer of mischief. "George was such a prankster! He had this playful energy that made every day on set even more exciting. It was like adding a little spice to the mix," Lisa recalls with a laugh.
While the on-screen dynamic between the girls and Charlotte Rae’s character, Mrs. Garrett, was one of mentorship, Lisa shares that their off-screen relationship was more of a professional camaraderie. "Charlotte treated us as equals. We were coworkers, and there was a mutual respect between us. We really enjoyed working together, but it wasn’t the same as the mother-daughter dynamic we portrayed," Lisa explains.
For years, fans have been buzzing about the possibility of a Facts of Life reboot. However, Lisa sets the record straight on why the project never came to fruition. "We were all incredibly disappointed when it didn’t happen. We’d been trying to find a way to collaborate for about a decade, and when it seemed like this was finally going to happen, we were all thrilled," Lisa reveals. "Unfortunately, the writers’ strike and actors’ strike hit, and then Pa and Norman Lear passed away. After that, the momentum just faded away. It was a real letdown for all of us."
